This IDC Forecast Update forecasts and analyzes the worldwide media tablet market by region. It updates and supersedes Worldwide and U.S. Media Tablet 2012–2016 Forecast (IDC #234290, April 2012). It includes shipment, revenue, and ASP data for the 2012–2016 forecast period as well as segmentation by consumer versus commercial adoption, WiFi versus 3G/4G support, and operating system (OS). Media tablets, as exemplified by Apple's iPad, are tablets that run a mobile operating system. As such, current Windows 7 and future Windows RT and Windows 8 tablets are not forecast in this document (they appear in the PC Tracker forecast). In the first quarter of 2012, Apple reasserted its dominance in the media tablet market thanks to a strong iPad launch in March and softness in demand for Android-based products. As we head toward the second half of 2012, we're expecting plenty of new products from major players, which means this fast-evolving market shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
